Services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, and YouTube Premium fall into this category.
8/10 (Very Good): Solid, well-rounded apps with full content access, good performance, and regular updates. Minor limitations — such as occasional stability issues, ads on lower tiers, or missing niche features — prevent a perfect score. BBC iPlayer, DAZN, and Channel 4+ score here.
7/10 (Good): Functional and reliable apps that cover the basics well but may lack advanced features, have a less polished interface, or carry ad interruptions that affect the experience. Services like ITVX (free tier), Tubi, and Hayu sit in this range.
6/10 (Adequate): Apps that work but feel dated, lack offline downloads, or have noticeable gaps in features compared to mainstream competitors. Examples include Channel 5, Arrow Player, and free-tier Discovery+.
Key factors that influence scoring include: availability of offline downloads, streaming quality ceiling (HD vs. 4K), ad presence, interface polish, stability and crash frequency, and whether the app offers full feature parity with the desktop or TV experience.
5. Why It Matters
For most people, a smartphone is the most personal and frequently used screen they own. A well-built mobile app means your streaming service travels with you — whether you're on a lunch break, a long journey, or simply watching in bed. Poor mobile apps, by contrast, can make an otherwise good service frustrating to use day-to-day.
